Surveys of Students, Faculty and Staff

Texas State routinely conducts assessments to collect information used in planning and decision-making and to identify opportunities for improvements to programs and services. The Office of Institutional Research administers or assists with institutional participation in the following surveys, as well as numerous smaller surveys that focus on narrower topics:

Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE)

The BCSSE is a national survey that collects data about entering college students' high school academic and co-curricular experiences, as well as their expectations for participating in educationally purposeful activities during the first college year.  Texas State participated for the first time in 2009.

CIRP Freshman Survey

 The CIRP Freshman Survey is a longitudinal study of freshmen in American colleges and universities conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California-Los Angeles and sponsored by the American Council on Education. Texas State participates in the survey in odd-numbered years. Freshmen complete the survey during their participation in PAWS Preview just prior to the start of fall classes. Results are available for 2003, 2005, and 2007.

CIRP College Senior Survey

The CIRP College Senior Survey is a national study about college seniors that examines the effectiveness of college.  Conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA, the survey collects students' opinions on many items relevant to examining the impact of college.  Texas State graduating seniors who are candidates for the May commencement are asked to complete the survey online near the end of the spring semester. Results are available for 2009.

Graduate Alumni Survey

The Graduate Alumni Survey was created in 2008 to collect information from alumni who received master’s or doctoral degrees. The survey includes items addressing employment, continuing education, and evaluation of graduate students’ experience at Texas State.  Results are available for 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

The NSSE obtains information from students enrolled at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities nationwide about participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for student learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. Texas State began participating in 2010.

Student Satisfaction Survey

This customer satisfaction survey is administered to students every other year in compliance with Senate Bill 1563 of the 76th Texas Legislative Session to assess satisfaction with student services. Results are available for 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010.

Survey of Campus Environment and Facilities

This survey is conducted every four years to collect opinions from students, faculty and staff about the campus facilities and environment at Texas State as part of the Campus Master Planning project. Results are available for 2003 and 2007.

Undergraduate Alumni Survey

The Undergraduate Alumni Survey is administered every year to collect information from recent bachelor’s degree graduates about their current employment status, job-seeking experience, continuing education activities and plans, experience and education at Texas State, and interest in assisting with admission recruitment activities.Results are available for 2004, 2006, 20072008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Peer Surveys

Annually, Texas State collects comparative data from peer institutions for use in planning and decision-making.  The Office of Institutional Research administers these surveys and makes results available to participating institutions.  Currently, data are collected regarding tuition, fees, room and board costs.  For each of the surveys listed below, results are available for current and past years; you may choose a specific report by using the drop-down selection boxes for each survey.
